Believe in yourself and breathe

It was a bit of a rush this morning.  The alarm went off mid-dream, so waking up wasn’t on my agenda.  The cat was snuggled close, and now I think about it, I may have slept through.  Not a usual occurrence.

I had intended on wearing a dress, it’s a new second hand one with a cinched waist and grey koalas.  Yeh, you heard me right, it is absolutely covered in koalas.  Anyway, it didn’t make it onto my body. That would have meant thinking about tights, shoes, cardy. . . And let me tell you, there was no time for that today.

So, there I was in my trusty work trousers and aqua coloured top.  I did manage a necklace, my gold tree of life that holds memories of my family.  A gift in itself, but the givers truly precious.

At the bus stop there was one lone fellow, not familiar to me, his head bent.  I took my position on the curb, totally amazed by the lightness of the sky.  Truthfully, it’s gone from pitch black to brightness in a matter of weeks.  The birds were happy, it was truly a cacophony of sounds, most hidden in the shadows of the leaves, nurturing their eggs, smooth ovals nestled in home-made houses, nests of twigs and fibre.  I can imagine the warmth of the mother, the slow swaying of the branch, the rustle of the leaves, the feeling of protection.

A quick glance up the road, there was no bus. If I hadn’t dropped a bit of rubbish in the bin, I would have missed it.  But I did, so I didn’t.  As I turned back, my fellow commuter looked up, he smiled and said good morning and oh my gosh, he had beautiful eyes.  The type to turn heads, the ones to get hearts racing.  No, my heart didn’t race but that brief glance reminded me how easy it is to miss a thing of beauty.  How our days seem filled with the mundane, yet there amongst our everyday activities are little snippets of magic,

The bus trip was uneventful. To get a few extra steps in, I disembarked two stops before my city stop.  As I crossed the road, a low flying crow black as Indian ink flew past me like a bullet shot at close range.  Just for a second I saw the gleam of his ebony-coloured eye and the burnt orange morsel he held wedged between his beak.  My heart took an extra beat and I smiled in happiness at the wonder of nature.

Walking through Southbank is a treat any old time but in the early morn it is spectacular.   I wandered under the bougainvillea arbour, was mesmerised by the myriad of coloured reflections rippling on the surface of the river.  With the sun peeking out from behind the city buildings, it looked like a place of intrigue and beauty.  Like the cover of a book, you just can’t wait to read.

I’ve lived and worked here for quite some years and still, it surprises me.  Yes, it holds the stories of yesteryear but it also holds the promise of friendships to be forged, adventures to be had and a million opportunities.

They are there, waiting to be tweaked and teased, waiting patiently for you and I to seek them out, to dream and imagine possibilities and turn them into reality.  With kind and courageous hearts, grasp them tightly, believe in yourself and breathe.
